Program Description
“Life is a Cabaret” is the second original show describing our lives. Our first show is called “You Do Speak English, Don’t You?” which we have performed over forty times since 2014, mostly in public libraries around the U.S. Our new show, “Life is a Cabaret,” is a musical comedy describing our life together from 1968, when we met as foreign students in West Germany, to the present time. Through flashbacks the show highlights some avant-garde Czech songs from the 1930s between the two world wars as well as later during the cold war. Both of us lived through the cold war, each on opposite sides of the Iron Curtain. In the show, we share through dialog our firsthand experiences about that time. “Life is a Cabaret” contains twelve mostly cabaret songs, both American and Czech, all combined through dialog and accordion music with funny stories from our life. Out of the twelve, four of the musical numbers are well-known Czech cabaret songs and four are Mark's own pieces.

Mark and Helena performed “Life Is a Cabaret” at the Vernonia Public Library on May 25, 2024."It was an absolute joy to have Mark and Helena perform at our library. The audience was mesmerized and fully enjoyed every part of the show. What a truly wonderful, talented and kind couple. I can't wait to have them back"
- Brandi Fennell, Library Director, Vernonia Public Library, Oregon

Testimonial of “Life Is a Cabaret” performance at Garden Home Library in Portland, Oregon (October 28,2023):

We've hosted several different performances by Mark and Helena. Their shows are always delightful, charming, and humorous. Most recently, we had a packed house for "Life is a Cabaret", which included songs from Johann Strauss, George Gershwin, and Otis Blackwell, as well as some of Mark's own compositions. If the library hadn't needed to close, people would have stayed for longer to ask more questions! Everyone attending enjoyed the show with some thanking me for hosting an event like this.
